It’s believed that the gates of the netherworld are opened during this time — but don’t be scared, celebrations of the Ghost Festival in Hong Kong aren’t spooky at all!Throughout the lunar month, celebrations are held across the city, including traditional rituals like burning joss paper, Chiu Chow operas, burning effigies of the “Ghost King”, distributing auspicious rice and auctioning auspicious objects. The Yu Lan Festival of the Hong Kong Chiu Chow community has even been inscribed onto the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The upcoming Yu Lan Cultural Festival in Victoria Park will feature exciting experiences such as the Festival Treats Competition, Yu Lan Festival Offerings Competition, and the immersive, interactive theatre experience “Yu Lan 100 Wishes”. There will also be workshops and special photo spots (don’t miss the “Yu Lan Stories at Kowloon Walled City” pop-up!).
