From 30th Nov to 11th Dec, there is an exhibition "Loved & Love by Yayoi Kusama" in SOGO Hong Kong (16/F). In this exhibition, you can find many signature elements of Kusama's artwork like infinity nets, pumpkins, polka dots, phallic-shaped and self-obliteration. Yayoi Kusama is born as youngest daughter of the nursery wholesale dealer in 1929 in Matsumoto City, Japan. She stared her paintings at 10 years old to escape from the fear of the hallucination. She moved to the United Stated in 1957 and held her first soft exhibition in New York in 1959. She started to create the infinity nets from that time. The first signature element is infinity nets. You can frequently see it in Kusama's artwork. Most of the time, she will use it as the background of her painting. Those nets are no beginning, ending and center. She will make use of the color of the nets to express her different emotions. Infinity Nets (2004) Infinity Nets (2004) The next important element is polka dots. Polka dots are the symbol of Kusama. You can see the polka dots everywhere in her art creations. Besides, this element always mix up with other elements to appear. High Heels (1999) City (1989) These two paintings consist of the polka dots and infinity nets. In "High Heels", she used the glitters as colors to paint it. She expressed the point of view that why she loves pumpkins before.“It seems that pumpkins do not inspire much respect. But I was enchanted by their charming and winsome form. What appealed to me most was the pumpkin’s generous unpretentiousness. That and its solid spiritual base.” Therefore, it is no wonder that there are lots of pumpkins' creations. Although there is a small exhibition of Yayoi Kusama, we still can see many particular symbols of her work.
