Founded in 1917, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) is the largest food and nutrition professional organization in the United States, with nearly 72,000 members. The body’s membership is primarily registered dietitians and nutritional technologists, as well as many fellows, educators, students, nurses, physicians, clinical and community dietetic specialists, consultants, and catering managers, among others. The Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) under the Academy is the accreditation body for nutrition professional education programs. In 2011, the name was changed to the Accreditation Council for Nutrition and Dietetics Education (ACEND). The committee is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and is a member of the Professional and Occupational Certification Committee. All nutrition programs certified by the agency are formal programs. The society changed its name in 2012 from the former American Dietetic Association (ADA). At the beginning of its establishment, the society was headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded by a group of women led by Lena Cooper and the first president, Lulu G. Graves. The main purpose at that time was to Helping the World War I government preserve food and improve public health. Now headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has offices in Chicago and Washington, DC, as well as other organizations and entities such as the Commission on Dietetic Registration, Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education, Academy Political Action Committee (Academy Political Action Committee) and Society Foundation, etc.
